It's time to think about preventing West Nile Virus. Here are some tips (The 7 Ds) from the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District:
DRAIN any standing water that may produce mosquitoes. DAWN and DUSK are times to avoid. These are the times when mosquitoes are most active. DRESS appropriately by wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors. DEFEND yourself against mosquitoes by using an effective insect repellent, such as DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. Make sure you follow all label directions! DOOR and window screens should be in good working condition. This will prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. DISTRICT personnel are available to address any mosquito problem you may be experiencing by calling 1-800-429-1022.

also if you live in a apartments and your land lord will not do anything poor bleach into standing water and that should kill their larva too.

This virus is not to be ignored. My dad contract this about 4 years ago and we almost lost him. Ensure that you apply the correct insect repellent to you and your family and follow all the tips Elizabeth mentions above.
