How can you tell if your child's tonsils are swollen? I don't even know what tonsils look like. My daughter has had a sore throat for a few days and says her tonsils feel swollen. I tried to look down her throat, but it's hard to see and I don't really know what I'm looking for.

swollen tonsils or tonsilitis looks like the walls of the throat are coming together.  very red and if infected white spots, all she would have to do is open wide and you would see it immediately.  the sides of her throat will look like they are bulging together.

Get out the flash light and have your daughter open her mouth and say AHHH.  You should see the back of her throat with the Uvula (the thing that hangs down) and the side of her throat will look red and swollen with the two side walls comming closer together and you may even see some white pus.  You will want to make sure she drinks lots of fluids, kids tend to stop drinking when their throat hurts.  Warm soups or cold ice creams can be soothing.  Call up your pediatrician and have her get in to be seen.  I've attached a picture, so hopefully it helps.

Momabear 40, Where I work has anatomy pictures the doctors can use to put into the electronic medical records, I just right clicked on the picture I wanted, hit copy then pasted into the text box for the reply.  I hope it helped, I know I learn better when I can see it visually.

When my daughter had repeated strep, 3 or more months in a row, her tonsils would swell so badly it changed the way she talked. Doctors don't like to take them out anymore, but even so, once we did that she never had strep again, and I'd say maybe 2 sore throats since, been about 7 years now. You don't want to consider this unless there is a persistant problem of course.
